Straight Razor Shaving

If you have shaved for many years, the thought of moving from a disposable or cartridge razor to straight razor shaving has probably crossed your mind.  Perhaps you think the task would be too difficult, or you might believe straight razors are not even available any more.  Both ideas are mistaken.  Not only are the razors available, this is becoming a more popular way to shave.  You can get a clean and comfortable shave every time and will enjoy the process each morning.  Anyone can learn to use a straight razor but it will take some practice before you become skilled with it.

When you are ready to begin shaving, the first thing you must do is to prepare your beard.  Most men take a hot shower before shaving and that naturally softens your beard.  You may want to moisten your face again with hot water before you begin shaving.  Preparing your soap is a very important part of the shave.  Run your brush under the hot water, rolling it in your fingers, allowing it to fill with water.  Remove it from the stream and allow the excess water to run out of the brush but do not shake it.  Put the brush into your soap mug and begin to gently turn the end of the bristles over the soap.  When it has gathered soap on the ends, it is time to begin building lather on your face.  Straight razor shaving is really an art form and you will become an expert.

Move the brush in a circular motion on your face, allowing the lather to spread.  Hold your razor in your prominent hand keeping your thumb on the back of the blade.  Maintain an approximate thirty-degree angle of the blade to your face.  Gently move the blade down your face from top to bottom of the beard area.  Do not press down.  Allow the weight of the blade to supply the pressure.  Gently repeat the process over the entire area.  You will then want to repeat the process to completely remove all remaining stubble.  You will find that straight razor shaving is a rewarding and satisfying experience.
